Jane Austen Wrecked My Life Director: Laura Piani Featuring: Camille Rutherford, Pablo Pauly, Charlie Anson Language: English, French Running Time: 98 min Overview: It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen has inspired more romcoms than any other author – and nearly all of them feature a modern take on an Austen protagonist, a new Lizzie Bennet or Emma Woodhouse. But this funny and smart French comedy instead gives us a 21st-century Jane Austen. British-French actor Camille Rutherford is terrific as Agathe, an aspiring novelist working in a Paris bookshop who wins a place on a Jane Austen writing retreat run by the author’s descendants. She’s not into dating apps (“I don’t want Uber sex!”). But she does have chemistry with Félix who has secretly submited Agathe’s writing to a Jane Austen society. On the retreat, Agathe takes an instant loathing to Austen’s great-great-great-nephew Oliver (Charlie Anson); he’s a professor of modern literature who loftily proclaims that Austen is overrated. Judgmental, arrogant, and altogether up himself, Oliver is the film’s Mr Darcy. You don’t have to be an Austen fan to enjoy this film, but it helps. Agathe’s dilemma between Oliver and Félix is classic Austen – but Agathe’s real discovery is not love, but her writing voice. And that’s the point the film makes without trying too hard: new century, same self-pressure and doubt. It glides along on Rutherford’s performance as Agathe – witty, warm, keenly observant, a bit clumsy and Bridget Jones-ish, but never, not even for a moment, cringy.

The Ballad of Wallis Island Director: James Griffiths Featuring: Tom Basden, Tim Key, Carey Mulligan Language: English Running Time: 99 min Overview: Fictional folk duo McGwyer and Mortimer (played by Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan) were big, back in the day – the day in question being circa 2009. They weren’t Dylan-big but to Charles (Tim Key) they were. He’s also a reclusive lottery winner, giving him the motive and the means to stage a private reunion gig for an audience of one on a remote island. As superfan Charles, Key blends a bit of the pleasant oddness he always brings to his acting roles and Basden does excellent work as a character, in contrast, whose face does the talking: It’s a perfect performance both as an actor and, when the songs come along, as a musician. Mulligan is entirely plausible as a woman who was once part of the duo and now makes jam in Portland with her geek-chic birdwatching husband. Basden wrote the music here and it is played and sung completely straight; it’s all rather beautiful.
