A Nice Indian Boy
Director: Roshan Sethi
Featuring: Karan Soni, Jonathan Groff, Sunita Mani, Zarna Garg, Harish Patel
Language: English
Running Time: 96 min
Overview: Naveen Gavaskar is a doctor, son of Indian immigrants, a Hindu, a fan of Bollywood and gay. He is obsessed with weddings; the film opens with a lavish bash for his sister and husband, but he feels conflicted as there is no place in his religious, cultural or family tradition for a gay celebration. Initially Naveen doesn’t have a potential husband but then he finds Jay, a charming and easy-going guy and despite Naveen’s up-tightness and anxiety, they do get round to planning a traditional wedding. Beyond the central romance, the supporting cast truly shines. Sunita Mani is Naveen’s quick-witted sister whose sarcasm evolves into unexpected and heartfelt support. Zarna Garg and Harish Patel are perfectly cast as Naveen’s parents, bringing humour and warmth to the story. Naveen’s mother delivers some of the film’s most tender and unforgettable moments. Meanwhile, Peter S. Kim, Naveen’s coworker, brings plenty of laughs, adding to the film’s delightful charm. Director Roshan Sethi does a fantastic job of bringing the story to life, skilfully balancing humour and emotional depth without making it feel forced. Each scene flows naturally, and the pacing captures the story’s cultural richness and emotional beats with finesse. A Nice Indian Boy isn’t trying to rewrite the rules of cinema or aim for high-stakes drama or Oscar glory. Instead, it excels in what it sets out to do. It offers a charming and meaningful take on love that resonates with audiences.

Dead of Winter
Director: Brian Kirk
Featuring: Emma Thompson, Marc Menchaca, Laurel Marsden
Language: English
Running Time: 98 min
Overview: From the freezing heart of Fargo country in snowy Minnesota comes a quite outrageously enjoyable suspense thriller starring Emma Thompson; It is a treat to  see Thompson handle a pistol with a scope and to also demonstrate where on the body you can get shot and still keep moving! Dead of Winter has an old-school barnstorming brashness, some edge-of-the-seat tension, a mile-wide streak of sentimentality, a dash of broad humour and a horrible flourish of the macabre. Emma Thompson plays neighbourly and good-natured Minnesota widow who with her recently deceased husband, ran a fishing supplies store and like him was keen on ice-fishing: venturing out on huge freezing lakes, drilling a hole in the ice, setting up a phone-box sized ice shelter for warmth and lowering the bait and lure. She is returning to a remote lake, the scene of their first date, on a mission to scatter his ashes. Getting a bit lost, Thompson finds herself pulling into a very strange property to ask directions; she hears disquieting sounds from the interior and sees a peculiar man (Marc Menchaca) chopping wood in front of a sickeningly vivid splash of blood on the snow. The man curtly explains, in response to her tactless inquiry, that this is due to “a deer” and tells her where to find her lake. But it is only on leaving him that Thompson is to discover the awful truth: this man is keeping a teenage girl (Laurel Marsden) prisoner and apparently intending to kill her. The story rattles along, entertaining and alarming, until it reaches its horror on the ice. Thompson’s relatable presence and likability-aura make a very good solvent for the concentrated nastiness of Marc’s wife and what she has in mind for her teen prisoner. There’s a distinct chill.
